From January 2006, Motorola and Kodak have announced that they would collaborate on an “alliance intended to fulfill the promise of mobile imaging for consumers.” Two and a half years later, Motorola and Kodak announced the MOTOZINE ZN5 which has perhaps the most advanced camera images around any phone.
Kodak has certainly pulled their weight with ZN5, but Motorola? Moto its contribution to the ZN5 is a GSM phone with WiFi, a fairly standard 2.4 “display, GPS and not 3G.
What were thought Motorola? It is clear that the Nokia N95 and N95 8 GB are phones of competition, and the N95 was announced almost two years ago. Almost all 5-megapixel camera 3G phones and most have new GPS that allows geotagging and satellite navigation.
It’s not as if Motorola can not make decent phones - to the Kodak 5-megapixel camera as a platform Z10 UMTS or a version of the A1800 and you have a device that is difficult to beat. Motorola can clearly be 3.5G, GPS and now decent cameras, so why not put anything in a device?
In essence, the Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 resembles roughly two devices stuck to each other - a decent digital camera and a rather dull GSM phone. Yes, the unit can use the Wi-Fi to send images and can also use the help of Bluetooth for print, but it could just was so much better.
So why the most ZN5? Well, Motorola has been leaking previews of the aircraft over the sample photos taken with the phone for some time. It is clear that the MOTOZINE ZN5 is a big deal for Moto, and yet only the handset fails to deliver .. just when they need it most. Although Motorola is trying to recover from its RAZR addiction, it can not get things.
We do not know if Motorola have something else big queue for 2008. We doubt. And the sad reality is that if the ZN5 is really the best they can come up, then Motorola mobile phone company is certainly doomed ..
.. and it would be a shame because we know that people Moto can do great things. So maybe .. just maybe .. there is something waiting in the wings that really show what Motorola can do if it tried.
